Founded in the 13th century by King Louis IX as a port for the Crusades, Aigues-Mortes has kept its medieval ramparts intact. All around, the salt marshes form a landscape of pink-tinged lagoons.

From Le Moulin Bérénice: About 30 minutes by car.

Don’t miss

  • The rampart walk : a 1.6 km wall walk with views over the town and the Camargue.
  • The Tour de Constance, a former prison and the town’s symbol.
  • The Aigues-Mortes salt marshes, to explore by little train or by bike, with their pink waters and salt mountains.
  • The lanes, squares and café terraces of the old town, perfect for lunch.

Good to know

The late-afternoon light on the ramparts and salt marshes is superb. Easy to combine with a visit to Le Grau-du-Roi.
